PERSONAL JOURNEY

For Your Individual Use between Sessions

The 120 believers in the upper room waited a total of ten days for the Holy Spirit’s coming (Acts 1:12 – 2:1). What did they do all that time?

A brief period was spent in choosing a new apostle, Matthias, to replace Judas. But most of the time, they simply “all joined together constantly in prayer” (Acts 1:14). Hour after hour, day after day, they waited before the Lord, anticipating the promise Jesus had made to them. They eagerly wanted the Holy Spirit to come and fill them with his power and presence. They could think of nothing more important to capture their attention.

Over the next seven days of your life, before the next group meeting, find a quiet place and give yourself repeatedly to prayer for the fullness of the Holy Spirit. Ask him to come and control you—your mind, your thoughts, your motives, your various forms of service to God’s kingdom. Be open to whatever he wants to do in your life. The original disciples didn’t know what to expect, but they were open.

You don’t need to feel pressured to constantly verbalize sentences and paragraphs to God. You can simply wait in passive mode, listening for his voice. Some of the deepest spiritual experiences happen without planning or programming.

While no doubt you have daily responsibilities that will pull you away during this week, keep coming back to this place of prayer. Let your attitude and even your posture convey the desire of “Come, Holy Spirit—I need you. Do everything in me that you know would be best.”

Feel free to record any insights from these experiences below.
